There are over 230 meetups on meetup.com discussing Node.js. We think that’s fantastic, and reflects the massive developer interest in getting up-to-date, solid advice on the best ways to use Node. Check out that proliferation on this map (cleverly represented in the form of hexagons!):
We want to make this growth even bigger. For example, there are 22 meetup groups in San Francisco discussing Node, but only 3 within 25 miles of Bangalore, India. Look at the map above again; there is a glaring disparity here, despite the massive significance of developers in countries like Brazil, India, and Russia.
If we can get more people involved in Node.js, then the spread of quality developers, code and community will keep going up. Onward!
Meetup in a Box : Share Node.js Presentations with the World
In the meetup scene, thousands of presentations are delivered yearly. But they are delivered (at best) only a handful of times by the person who created the presentation — and that’s where it stops. Let’s give those presentations a much longer shelf life. Let’s put them in the hands of developers all around the world.
This is where meetupinabox.org steps in. It is a meeting grounds for two groups of people: those aspiring to start a Node meetup in their own town, and those who want to share their Node presentations with the world.
Why the focus on Node.js? At StrongLoop we are primarily a group of Node.js developers, so it’s much easier for us to arrange details, speakers, and content around Node.js. In the future we will expand our focus out to other languages.
Upload your Presentations
Sharing your presentations with others on the site is done after entering a few pieces of information:
- Title of your presentation
- Longer description of the talk
- Link to recorded video
- Link to the presentation (on dropbox, github, etc)
As we get submissions in we’ll process them and put them up on the site within a couple days, to ensure all the links are appropriate and we can perhaps fill in any missing pieces of information if necessary.
Start a Meetup
If there isn’t a meetup group in your town, we (StrongLoop) want to help! Just give us some details about where you want to host a meetup and what you want to present about on our start a meetup page. If you have a local speaker who can deliver the content, and the ambition to spread knowledge, then we’ll help you get there.
A Thriving, Prosperous Community
The developers at StrongLoop have been deeply engaged with the Node community for years. I recently took over as the organizer of the very active San Francisco Node.js group and my experience with the Node community has always been positive.
We want to continue this tradition and raise the quality of knowledge wherever possible. If you have any feedback for me — on how we can improve on this idea, or anything else community related — please let me know! Reach out to me at matt (at) strongloop.com.
Happy hacking, and happy teaching!
